Two-factor authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication (2FA) secures login with exactly two independent factors, usually a password plus a one-time code.

What is two-factor authentication (2FA)?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) requires two independent proofs at login, typically a password (knowledge) and a one-time code or passkey (possession). This protects accounts even if the password becomes known.

How does 2FA work?

After entering the password, a second factor is requested, such as a time-based one-time code from an authenticator app (TOTP) or a passkey. Login succeeds only with both factors.

2FA and MFA

2FA is a special case of multi-factor authentication (MFA) with exactly two factors. MFA covers two or more factors.

How SecureCloud provides 2FA

SecureCloud supports two-factor authentication in Advanced Access Management, including TOTP, passkeys and email OTP, so companies can add an extra layer of protection to access.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 2FA and MFA?

2FA uses exactly two factors. MFA (multi-factor authentication) requires two or more factors; 2FA is therefore a special case of MFA.

Is 2FA via SMS secure?

SMS codes are better than no second factor but are considered weaker because they can be intercepted or redirected. Authenticator apps and passkeys are more secure.

Why should companies enable 2FA?

Because most account takeovers rely on stolen passwords. A second factor prevents access even if the password is known.
