Since the acquisition by the US-based Kiteworks group (headquartered in San Mateo, California) in 2023, DRACOON is no longer an independent German company. For companies in regulated industries such as healthcare, financial services, or public administration, this represents a serious compliance risk.

DRACOON requires a minimum of 50 licenses on the Basic and Pro plans, and as many as 100 on the Premium plan. For small and medium-sized businesses with 5, 10, or 30 employees, that is simply oversized.

DRACOON focuses on secure file sharing and document management. For day-to-day collaboration, editing of Office files in the browser is missing; editing takes place in locally installed applications via the mounted drive. The electronic signature is reserved for the Premium plan from 100 licenses (as of August 2026).

SecureCloud combines secure storage, a full office suite (SecureWork), and legally compliant electronic signatures (SecureSign) in a single platform, everything encrypted, everything from one source.

Kiteworks has acquired not only DRACOON but also ownCloud and Maytech. For ownCloud, migration of customers to the Kiteworks platform has already been announced.
